Significant numbers of the world’s
population are routinely subject to torture, starvation, terrorism,
humiliation, mutilation, and even murder simply because they are female. If
this were any group other than women being maimed and killed, it would be
recognized as a civil and political emergency and a gross violation of their
humanity. Yet, despite clear record of deaths and demonstrable abuse, women’s
rights are not commonly understood or classified as human rights. |

Casting Pearls is an account of the first
struggles of women for right to vote. The 1920s was time of political excitement
and social change, a time universal suffrage was being hotly debated and when
Sri Ponnambalam Ramanadan said that giving women the vote was like casting
pearls before swine. The pioneering women of the Women’s Franchise union
challenged all the diehards and came out boldly for the cause of basic
democratic rights for women – namely, the right to vote, the right to contest
election and the right to sit in the legislature. |
