The rise of the Colonial Bourgeoisie in

Sri Lanka

Kumari Jayawardene

A Nice Burgher Girl

Jean Arasanayagam

A fascinating and exhaustive Marxist analysis of Sri Lanka’s development.
                           - Prabhat Patnaik
this ambitious, category-defying book succeeds both as a work of scholarship and as an open-ended engagement with the past. To read it is to be pushed beyond established ways of seeing, to acquire something of the author’s audacity, her resolve to step across boundaries to think things afresh.
                              - Susan Ram

Jean Arasanayagam, a Sri Lankan writer of Dutch Burgher origin, traces her saga journey from childhood to adolescence to young adulthood and beyond. A Nice Burger Girl is a quest to an identity which is part of her inheritance, creating form out of the complex  kaleidoscopic patternings of connections and interconnections.

Matters of Violence

ed. by Jayadeva Uyangoda

Society, State & Religion in Pre-modern
Sri Lanka

Amaradasa Liyanagamage

An Anthology of violence in Sri Lanka brings together efforts by a number of scholars in recent years to grapple with various dimensions, manifestations and experiences of violence in Sri Lankan society. The question of social and political violence continuous to be a central theme embedded in Sri Lanka’s processes  of social and political change.  It is the second and enlarged edition of Matters of Violence which was first published by the SSA in 1997.

In this publication, Angela Little traces educational progress in the plantation sector, from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century using a wide variety of primary and secondary sources. The analysis is embedded with political, social and economic relations which stretch beyond the confines of the plantation; within a plural society in which the plantation people have gradually become more central to the political mainstream and within a national and global economy in which plantation production has become less central and less profitable over time.

Religion in Context

ed. by Jayadeva Uyangoda

Tomorrow is Ours – The Trotskyist Movement in Ceylon, 1935 - 48

Charles Wesley Ervin

The essays brought together in this volume originally appeared in the SSA journal Pravada, which later became Polity. Most essays deal with dimensions of Buddhism’s problematic relationship with lay society and politics. Some focus on Buddhism’s this-worldly encounter in early India, particularly from the perspective of women, war and peace and social justice.

Most studies of the left movement in India focus on the Communist Party and its splinters. However, there were many socialists in India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) who opposed Stalinism. This book is the result of more than thirty years of research.

Ethnic and class Conflict In Sri Lanka:

The emergence of Sinhala Buddhist consciousness 1883-1983

Kumari  Jayawardena

International McCarthyism: The Case of
Rhoda Miller de Silva

Judy Waters Pasqualge

Sri Lanka in the colonial and post-colonial years has seen long periods of ethnic harmony between all classes consisting of different ethnic groups. But Sinhala-Buddhist consciousness as a dominant trend, while having an anti-colonial bent, also led at times to antagonisms against minorities. This resulted in the growth of ethnic consciousness among workers of different ethnic groups. This book inquires into the formation of ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka over a hundred year period from 1883 to 1983.

In 1954 Rhoda Miller (married to Sri Lankan Joe de Silva) was labelled as a subversive and deported from Sri Lanka (Ceylon). A journalist born in New York state who had already published books on post-war Poland and the Rosenberg case. Rhoda, with the assistance of friends in New York, would successfully challenge the United States-inspired deportation and return to Sri Lanka.

Negotiating Household Politics Women’s Strategies in Urban Sri Lanka

Sepali Kottegoda

Writing that Conquers:
Re-reading Knox’s an Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon

Sarojini Jayawickrama

What roles do women play in the survival of low-income urban households? Are household survival strategies collective efforts, and/or do individual members follow their own independent strategies? Do women compared to men have different perceptions of their rights and obligations? Sri Lankan feminist Sepali Kottegoda incisively discusses these and other related questions.

This is a new and exciting project: a study of Robert Knox’s writings on Ceylon, putting them into relation with modern critical theory. Dr Jayawickrama is an expert on the history of Sri Lanka, studies of gender and of ‘the other’. She has brought these things together very insightfully in order to re-read Knox from the standpoint of narrative theory.

Laksiri Fernando

This essay explores the nature of the Sinhala identity in the Kandyan Kingdom through a critical reading of Michael Roberts’ recent book, Sinhala Consciousness. It situates Roberts’ work in the context of the heated intellectual debates on this subject and compares the treatment of these issues in Sri Lankan studies with recent scholarship on Southeast Asia.

This new work of Laksiri Fernando is based mainly on filed research conducted in the Kalutara District and investigates some of the socio-political dynamics of police-civil relations in Sri Lanka as a major problem area of good governance.

Ravi Vatheesparan

Labouring to Learn:

Towards a political economy of plantations, people and education in Sri Lanka (Trilingual)

Angela W. Little

This is the first monograph published by the SSA under its project ‘ Studies on the Sri Lankan Left’. In this short work Ravi Vaitheesparan  traces the life and times of N Shanmugathasan, prominent trade union and political leader of the communist party of Ceylon who later became the leader of Maoist CCP. Author discusses the history of the left movement and the reactions of its leadership to the ethnic conflict of Sri Lanka which led to the present continuous war.

Tesawalamai: Protection of community rights or Discrimination of women?

Ambika Satkunanathan

Polity has published numerous important articles on gender which have been reproduced frequently elsewhere. Edited by Jayadeva Uyangoda and Kumari Jayawardena, Polity has become an important forum for discussion and debate on democracy, devolution, peace, social and economic justice and gender equity. Polity has established a readership among academics, researchers, policy-makers, activists, diplomats, English-reading intelligentsia, etc.

This monograph is one of a series on the customary laws of Sri Lanka and the General Law that examines legal provisions which discriminate against women. It explains in simple language the legal status of women in Tesawalamai–the customary law applicable to the Tamil inhabitants of the Northern Province. The aim of the SSA in publishing such monographs is to promote changes in the out-dated discriminatory laws of Sri Lanka.

Conflict, Negotiation, Mediation and Peace: Guide to Learning Peace

Jayadeva Uyangoda

Debates in the Feminist  Movement

Nesiah Vasuki

The recent history of Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict is replete with attempts at negotiation to bring about a political settlement. There have also been instance of third-party mediation in the conflict. Meanwhile, the idea of ‘peace’ figures in very prominently in everyday political conservations.

There have been numerous attempts to provide a unifying definition of feminism. One variation of the most common definition asserts that feminism is simply the awareness of injustice within male/female relations, and an accompanying commitment to change the situation.

Women’s Rights as Human Rights:

Towards a Re-Vision of Human Rights

Casting Pearls:

The Women’s Franchise Movement in

Sri Lanka

Malathi de Alwis & Kumari  Jayawardena

Significant numbers of the world’s population are routinely subject to torture, starvation, terrorism, humiliation, mutilation, and even murder simply because they are female. If this were any group other than women being maimed and killed, it would be recognized as a civil and political emergency and a gross violation of their humanity. Yet, despite clear record of deaths and demonstrable abuse, women’s rights are not commonly understood or classified as human rights.

Casting Pearls is an account of the first struggles of women for right to vote. The 1920s was time of political excitement and social change, a time universal suffrage was being hotly debated and when Sri Ponnambalam Ramanadan said that giving women the vote was like casting pearls before swine. The pioneering women of the Women’s Franchise union challenged all the diehards and came out boldly for the cause of basic democratic rights for women – namely, the right to vote, the right to contest election and the right to sit in the legislature.

This publication is an inquiry into the formation of a democratic, pluralist state in Sri Lanka and its convergence with its multi-ethnic and plural society. It is an intervention in the present ‘devolution debate’ centered on reforming the constitutional framework of Sri Lanka, witch has been made a necessity by the ethnic conflict raging over the last two decades.

Privatisation of Tea Plantations

N. Shanmugaratnam

Changing Socio – Economic Relations in

the Kandyan Countryside

Newton  Gunasinghe.

Plantations form an integral and dominant part of the Sri Lankan economy. Started by British capital and serviced by immigrant Indian labour, The plantations were nationalied in the period 1973 to 1975 by a regime that was committed to nationalization as part of a process of achieving  a ‘socialist’ society.

This provocative is a study of changing production relations of the Kandyan peasantry, combining a comprehensive critical assessment of the literature on Marxist theory with solid evidence and original arguments. Gunasinghe demonstrates how archaic production relations were reactivated under the peripheral capitalism. This study is no doubt the first attempt to understand the peasantry in Sri Lanka in a Marxist- sociological perspective.

Matrilineal Communities, Patriarchal Realities:

A Feminist Nirvana Uncovered

Kanchana N. Ruvanpura

Hector Abhayavardhana

Selected Writings

Social Scientists’ Association

Kanchana Ruwanpura provides an astute analysis of patriarchal structures and resistance among female-headed households in Eastern Sri Lanka. Her works decisively debunks the conventional wisdom that Sri Lanka is a ‘feminist Nirvana’ that war is a primary reson to growth of female-headed households and that economists can not do solid qualitative work. This book is an important contribution to feminist economic analysis of household structures, development and the importance of ethnic differences.

This collection of Hector Abhayavardhana’s selected writings forms an important contribution to the history of the Left movement and politics in Sri Lanka and India. Hector Abhayavardana’s life was an eventful one. Born in 1919, he was educated at St.Thomas’ College, and graduated from the University of Ceylon, where he became a Marxist and an active supporter of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party in the late 1930s.

Forced Migration and

Changing Local Political Economies:

A Study from North Western Sri Lanka

N. Shanmugaratnam

Erasure of Euro-Asian focuses on the creation of the Euro- Asian communities in South Asia composed of Burghers, Anglo-Indians and Euro-Asian, and their vanguard role in the struggles for democratic rights in a colonial situation. The author argues that it was not Euro- Asian marginality, but their centrality that was important, for they raised issues and agitated reforms affecting the whole of society.

This study was conceived as a part of a larger study of war- induced forced migration in Sri Lanka. The main purpose was to document and analyse the socio-economic conditions of the displaced, the relations between the displaced and the local communities (hosts), and the more significant changes in the local political economies. Vavuniya and Puttalam were selected for fieldwork. In Vavuniya, the main focus was on the displaced and local Tamil people.

Beyond Mediation, Negotiation and

Negative Peace: Towards Transformative Peace in Sri Lanka

Jayadeva Uyangoda

The Rise of the Labor Movement in Ceylon

Kumari Jayawardena

The negotiation initiative between the UNF government and the LTTE of Sri Lanka has led to an engaging public debate concerning the strategies and objectives of the two sides as well as the possible outcomes of the process. Why did the UNF government and the LTTE opt for negotiations in 2001? What will be the outcome of the present negotiation process? Will it bring about peace? What kind of peace will Sri Lanka achieve in the transition from civil war? What is the impact of the role of international actors on the politics of the peace process?

An Important gap in the modern history of Sri Lanka is filled with this book – the first study made of the rise of the island’s lobour movement. The relationship between the Buddhist religious revival, growing nationalism, and the emergent labour movement from the basic structure for the author’s analysis. Strikes had far-reaching political effects during the fifty years discussed in this book. Unknown trade-union leaders who now receive their due place in Sri Lanka.

This is an important critical study of the question of periodization in Sri Lankan history, a question that has generated much historiographical controversy. Dr R.A.L.H.Gunawardena, author of the pioneer work on early history of Ceylon, Robe and the Plough tackles the vexed question of establishing continuity between historiography and scientific relevance of the endeavour to create conditions to end war and build national unity in Sri Lanka.
